While in the service Robert was stationed in Mildenhall, England for two years where he lived in a thatched roof house and used coal heater for heat. While living there Robert purchased a Austin Mini which he was able to bring back to the states when he was discharged. He and Kirk loaded the Mini up with what they could fit in the car and drove it from Texas back to Smith Center. Henry and Aleen were able to visit Robert in England and he drove them around in the Mini with his dad wearing a large Stetson hat sticking out the top.
After his time the service, Robert moved back home to help his father and brother Kirk on the family farm. Robert enjoyed farming, raising cattle and especially his wheat crops. He also loved his farm cats and would make sure he left food out for them in the barn. Robert had a love of cars and enjoyed looking for new deals or working on the cars he had collected. Besides his Austin Mini, Robert enjoyed driving and working on his yellow Lotus. Robert loved watching K-State play football and would make the trip to Manhattan whenever possible to watch them play. He really enjoyed laughing or giggling when Nebraska got beat by the Wildcats or any other team.
