Prairie View - Patricia A. Tien, 51, passed away Friday, March 23, 2018 at her home in Prairie View, KS.
She was born April 24, 1966 in Smith Center, KS, the daughter of Ronald E. Shellito and Connie S. Rice. On July 19, 1990 she was united in marriage to Scott Tien on the family farm in Prairie View. To this union they were blessed with two sons, Trevor and Brady.
Patty was a graduate of Smith Center High School class of 1984, she went on to Colby Community College where she received her LPN degree in 1986 and her RN degree in 1990 from Barton County Community College.
From 1991 through 2003, Patty was an RN in both the Stockton and Norton Correctional Facilities. From 2003 through 2014, she was a Director of Nurses (DON) and Health Service Administrator (HSA) for Correct Care Solutions in Norton, KS. From 2014 through 2015, Patty was a Senior HSA for Corizon Health in Norton, KS. Starting in 2015 Patty began working for KU as a Nursing Program Manager in providing medical contract oversight for the Kansas Department of Corrections and fulfilled that role until the time of her passing.
She was known for her thorough and meticulous work as well as her kindness and generosity. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Patty has received a number of awards since being involved with Healthcare in Corrections including Norton Correctional Facility (NCF) Contract Employee of the quarter, NCF Employee of the Year, Facility of the Year in 2011, Certificate of excellence in 2014, Received 100% compliance on American Correctional Association (ACA) Audit for NCF Clinic in 2013, and received 100% compliance on ACA Audit for ALL KDOC facilities in 2017. Patty is a certified Correctional Health Professional, a certified Corrections Nurse Manager, a Certified Health Service Administrator. Patty is a BLS Instructor with American Heart. She is also on a Certification Committee with ACA and a Nursing Committee with ACA.
She was a certified EMT for Phillips County and received the highest score on the state test for an EMT in Phillips County. Patty was also a volunteer firefighter for Phillips County.
Patty loved to travel with the boys, cheering them on at all their ball games, rodeos, jackpots, track meets, little league baseball and football games. She also enjoyed traveling along with Scott to his competition gun shoots. She loved tending to her flowers around the house and telling Scott he mowed and watered the lawn too much. Patty loved taking care of her family and always kept her house spic & span even though she did live with three boys. She enjoyed baking, popcorn, caramel apples, HGTV, football, Food Network, KU basketball and house renovations. When anybody in her family was hurt or sick they would always call "Dr" Patty to fix their ailments. She was a caring and giving person and would always be there in the time of need no matter the time of day. She enjoyed a good walk around Prairie View even when Giggy (their dog) had to be carried to go along. Giggy was her 3rd "son" and she would feed him ice cream off her own spoon, her two boys joked that she spoiled Giggy more than she did them.
Patty was a member of the Luctor Christian Reformed Church of Prairie View, KS. Over Patty’s last few months, she greatly strengthened her personal relationship with the Lord alongside her husband, Scott.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ronald Shellito and father-in-law, Henry Tien.
Patty is survived by her husband Scott Tien of Prairie View; two sons, Trevor (Whitney) Tien of Phillipsburg and Brady (Jessie Rubottom) Tien of Norton; mother, Connie (Doug) Rice of Smith Center; mother-in-law, Ann Tien of Prairie View; three brothers, Toby (Theresa) Shellito of Logan, Chris Shellito of Omaha, NE, Roy (Katie) Shellito of Smith Center; five sisters, Tina (Fouad) Hachem of Junction City, Julie (Allan) Clark of Osborne, Kelly (Jeremy Bryant) Flint of Marietta, Jodi (Gil) Frydendall of Smith Center, Shelly (Eric) Stanley of Osborne and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the Luctor Christian Reformed Church, Prairie View, KS, with Pastor Aaron Rust officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, Smith Center, KS, and until service time Wednesday at the church. Burial will take place in the Luctor Cemetery, Prairie View, KS. Memorials may be given to the Patricia A. Tien Memorial Fund and sent in care of the funeral chapel.
