Lebanon - Julia D. Allen, 99, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2019 at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, KS.
Julia was born August 30, 1920 in Lebanon, KS, the third child of Oscar and Nellie (Whitmore) Herndon. On November 27, 1940 she married Clarence Dean Allen in a double wedding with Edna Carper and Ernest Kattenberg. Julia and Clarence remained close friends with Edna and Ernest throughout their life. To this union Julia and Clarence were blessed with four children, Barbara Jean, Roger Dean, Velma Louise and Gayle Lynn.
Throughout her life Julia had several hobbies that she enjoyed. She enjoyed fishing with Clarence throughout their married life, catching bass and walleye. She sewed, quilted, canned vegetables and made the best homemade tomato juice around. Julia's main focus in life was always her family, she loved feeding her children and their friends before and after games as they grew up. Her children said that she could set the table for a crowd of people in under 15 minutes and always had enough food for anyone who would stop by during lunch or supper.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence, daughter Barbara Jean Schlatter, brother Russell (Ester) Herndon and three sisters, Rozella (Howard) Wilson, Lola (Ben) Kniss and Marie (William) Hartman.
Julia is survived by her children Roger (Janice) Allen of Lebanon, Velma (Ernest) Befort of Clay Center, Gayle (Lois) Allen of Lebanon; son-in-law, Ernest Schlatter; ten grandchildren, Walter (Kim) Schlatter, Sheila (Dwayne) Lorence, Rob (Kelly) Allen, Jody (Andy) Gutierrez, Mindy (Geoff) Eck, Kendall (Kyle) Allen, Kelley (Brad) Beier, Shelley (David) Diaz, Jennifer (Mark) Bucholtz, Todd (Nadine) Allen, and twenty-five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 30, 2019 at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, KS, with Pastor Lance McDowell officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 29, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to greet friends. Burial will take place in Price Cemetery, Lebanon, KS. Memorials may be given to U.S. Center Foundation and/or Lebanon Library and can be sent in care of the funeral chapel.
